In the October 22, 2006 issue of the New York Times, Public Editor Byron Calame finally admits that the disclosure of the S.W.I.F.T. banking data collection program was not a good idea:

This is essentially what I said on a local liberal blog about 4 months earlier:

So, in the meantime, because the “paper of record” decided back in June that the people’s right to know was more important than national security, an effective intelligence program used to follow the money in terrorist operations was compromised. And what does the old gray lady have to say about it? Oops. We were wrong. Never mind.

And all the fear mongering about journalists being whisked off to concentration camps in the dead of night? Well, that didn’t happen, either. Here’s the original post at PTS:

Remember this the next time a liberal cries, “Wolf!” about eroding civil liberties in one breath, and then calls conservatives alarmists in the next.

First, my wife is pregnant, she is about 6 weeks a long and is doing great. She has to take special medication so I am busy putting stuff up for sale on ebay to pay for it.

Next, I completed this a while ago, and I even bought one myself. The Ivorydome t-shirts are for sale here. The black one is $22.45 + shipping and handling. I now that is expensive, so I made a white one, it is only $16.45 + shipping. The shipping isn’t much and it gets to you pretty quick. These shirts will be good for the next time the local liberals want to have a party commemorating the death of our armed forces.

A couple of weekends ago I volunteered to help operate the computer system for data entry for the Susan G Komen foundation’s Race for the Cure. My employer volunteered last year and the system they designed for themselves to enter data was garbage. This year I wrote a web interface and MySQL database backend to manage the data. Things went 1000% smoother than last year and of course the race was a huge success. There were over 3700 registered participants, more than 1000 more from the previous year.

Last, consider this an open thread for the weekend. Feel free to discuss the upcoming election or whatever else. Happy Friday the 13th!

Update: I decided to put some more politics into this post.

Concerning the upcoming election: I am not worried about it. If the democrats win the majority that’s fine with me. They will be the ones on the pedestal and all of their promises will have to be put into action instead of being talked about. Democrats think they can do better than republicans, well if they get the majority they will be put to the test. I can’t wait to see what happens.

Also, something I read over at Right Wing News got me thinking, if, and possibly when, Republicans lose control of congress, who are they going to blame? Personally I would blame republicans for losing control. The GOP won’t be like democrats and blame non-existent voter fraud and label people who didn’t vote for them imbeciles. The GOP won’t pass the buck like the Democrats have. I think they will own up to their shortcomings and, in the event of a loss, will hopefully reform itself come 2008 and 2010.

Lastly, I find it sickening that people being angry at the GOP are giving up on them and voting Democrat. Those people are quitters. I find it troublesome that people would vote for the party that embraces Michael Moore’s or Cindy Sheehan’s ideology. I don’t deny the GOP sorely needs to get back to it’s roots and I think the people’s anger at the GOP is legitimate, but I think they should be working to reform the Republican party instead of abandoning it.

I found this at Michelle Malkin’s website today. The post talks about a national guardsman in Parkland, Washington who was attacked by four people, called the soldier a “baby killer,” and was left for dead.

The article doesn’t expressly say the attackers were anit-war activists, but how much convincing do you need?

This isn’t an isolated incident either. Michelle’s post links to other anti-military incidents as well, including an activist sentenced to 5 years in prison for attacking an army recruiting station, soldier beatings in Seattle. Not included in her links are other incidents in California where the ROTC HQ was vandalized on a college campus and a recovering soldier at Walter Reed Medical Center was sent a card that told him to die. (I am too busy to look up the links, but if you want them just ask)

I will admit the anti-troop, anti-military wing of the democratic party is only a small minority, but I wouldn’t be surprised if that movement is gaining strength. Is the left going to speak out against these crimes?

I laughed aloud when I read this the night before in reference to the Democratic party:

The Netroots along with many of the OG – Original Grassroots – are frustrated with the lack of success of the party that so obviously represents all the people.

And today I read this from righwingnews.com:

While 59 percent of Americans told an Associated Press poll this month that they disapproved of President Bush’s handling of Iraq, 64 percent disapproved of the Democrats’ handling of it. While 62 percent of Americans told a Washington Post/ABC News poll last month that they disapproved of Bush’s handling of the war, an even higher percentage of respondents, 71 percent, said the Democrats do not offer clear alternatives.

Ok, so the war is just one issue that democrats are disconnected from the people about. But it doesn’t matter if the democrats are connected with the people on other issues or not. What matters is what I think, because I say so. Do you disagree? Probably so, but let me tell you where I derive my logic.

You see, to the left, or at least a few people from that side of the aisle, argument with facts to back those arguments up don’t matter, as long as I think I am right combined with a need for laziness, as illustrated by this quote from a member of the “Truth” squad:

Bo, the reality based community has tried reasoning with wingnuts for the past 6 years. When people make stuff up, repeat known lies, and make irrational arguments it is a waste of time to debate them. It takes one minute to regurgitate some assinine talking point you can’t even recall correctly. It’s takes at least a half hour to research the stupid remarks to figure out just where such drivel originates. Then you spend days arguing over the meaning of words. It’s more effective and takes less time to just point and laugh.

This quote came after I politely requested explination as to why the author this editorial was, among other things, “…he has no f**kin’ idea of what he speaks…” and what was wrong about the article. I will point out, however, that eventually my request was answered with a thought out argument based on the author’s facts. However, the author of those comments probably fits into his peer’s category that he is not in a “career that does not have a god-da** thing to do with exploring modern economic theory,” thoughroughly invalidating his argument.

So there you have it friends. If you want to do argue against the left come up with one fact to counter their argument and either they will rationalize that you are an idiot and they will be too lazy to argue back (9 times out of 10 they are probably wrong and know it, which is why they will attack you in the first place) or they will come back with their own facts, in which case you better be able to prover your point. Don’t worry though, in the above exchange, out of 7 posters, excluding myself because I asked the question, only 1 was able to begin to rationalize why the editorial’s author was wrong.

Reality based indeed.
