Learn From Our Government’s Mistakes
Tuesday, August 29th, 2006Today (yesterday at 11:30 pm actually) is the anniversary of the beginning of one of the greatest governmental failures of the entire United State’s history.
Wikipedia has a great write up on Katrina.
The greatest thing I think we learned from that disaster was the grand ineptitude of government. Many arguments can be made where the failures are rooted and the partisans will bicker endlessly. One thing is for certain, though, and that is government cannot be trusted, especially when it comes to disaster relief.
I feel sorriest for the souls reaching for handouts in the days after the disaster. They are the ones who actively depended on the government and the government left a lot of them to die.
Don’t get me wrong, though. I would be quite thankful if the government helped me get on my feet after a huge disaster. The difference is, I am not going to “ride out the storm” and then expect the government to swoop down and rescue me.
While I am thinking of it, one of the most outlandish claims from the left came from Randall Robinson at the Huffington post saying that people were eating corpses to survive only 4 days after the worst of the storm had passed. Robinson has since retracted his claim but I recall reading the original post and the comment when unnoticed by the editors for quite some time. Talk about fear mongering.
Ivory Dome on WashingtonPost.com
Sunday, July 30th, 2006While checking through the stats for Ivory Dome this weekend and looking at where links came from I noticed this link. In the article on the lower right is a box that contains what bloggers are saying. In that box is a link to Curios Texan’s article on the a similar subject at Ivory Dome.
Thanks WaPo!
To all flag burners just ask permission
Thursday, July 13th, 2006Does the first Amendment gives us the right to desecrate the American flag?
Or is the flag a sacred symbol of our nation, deserving protection by law?
Tough call? “The solution”
For those who want to light Old Glory on fire, stomp all over it, or spit on it to make some sort of “statement,” I say let them do it. But under one condition: they MUST get permission from three sponsors.
First, you need permission of a war veteran. Perhaps a Marine who fought at Iwo Jima? The American flag was raised over Mount Surabachi upon the bodies of thousands of dead buddies. Each night spent on Iwo meant half of everyone you knew would be dead tomorrow, a coin flip away from a bloody end upon a patch of sand your mother couldn’t find on a map.
Or maybe ask a Vietnam vet who spent years tortured in a small, filthy cell unfit for a dog. Or a Korean war solider who helped rescue half a nation from Communism, or a Desert Storm veteran who repulsed a bloody dictator from raping and pillaging an innocent country. That flag represented your mother and father, your sister and brother, your friends, neighbors, and everyone at home. I wonder what they would say if someone asked them permission to burn the American flag?
Next, you need a signature from an immigrant. Their brothers and sister may still languish in their native land often under tyranny, poverty, and misery. Or maybe they died on the way here, never to touch our shores. Some have seen friends and family tortured and murdered by their own government for daring to do things we take for granted every day. For those who risked everything simply for the chance to become an American… What kind of feelings do they have for the flag when they Pledge Allegiance the first time? Go to a naturalization ceremony and see for yourself, the tears of pride, the thanks, the love and respect of this nation, as they finally embrace the American flag as their own. Ask one of them if it would be OK to tear up the flag.
Last, you should get the signature of a mother. Not just any mother. You need a mother of someone who gave their life for America. It doesn’t even have to be from a war. It could be a policeman, a fireman, or maybe a secret service or N.S.A. agent. Then again, it could be a common foot solider as well. When that son or daughter is laid to rest, their family is given one gift by the American people; an American flag. Go on, I dare you. Ask that mother to spit on her flag.
I wonder what the founding fathers thought of the American flag as they drafted the Declaration of Independence? They knew this act would drag young America into war with England, the greatest power on earth. They also knew failure meant more than just a disappointment. It meant they would die if they lost. But they needed a symbol, something to inspire the new nation. Something to represent the seriousness, the purpose and conviction that we held our new idea of individual freedom. Something worth living for. Something worth dying for. I wonder how they’d feel if someone asked them permission to toss their flag in a mud puddle?
Away from family, away from the precious shores of home, in the face of overwhelming odds and often in the face of death, the American flag inspires those who believe in the American dream, the American promise, the American vision… Americans who don’t appreciate the flag don’t appreciate this nation. And those who appreciate this nation appreciate the American flag. Those who fought, fought for that flag. Those who died, died for that flag. And those who love America, love that flag, and defend it.
So if you want to desecrate the American flag, before you spit on it or before you burn it… I have a simple request. Just ask permission. Not from the Constitution, not from some obscure law, not from the politicians or the pundits. Instead, ask those who defended our nation so that we may be free today. Ask those who struggled to reach our shores so that they may join us in the American dream. And ask those who clutch a flag in place of their sacrificed sons and daughters, given to this nation so that others may be free. For we cannot ask permission from those who died wishing they could, just once… or once again… see, touch, or kiss the flag that stands for our nation, the United States of America….me
On Sunday…
Monday, June 12th, 2006…3 people did a search for “amarillo independent” and what came up was mostly stuff for AISD but what also came up on the 6th link down was a link to this website, specifically my post welcoming readers of the Amarillo Independant, a new progressive newspaper here in our local area. If you recall I had a photo of myself published and in that photo was a link to this website.
The new newspaper does not yet have a website but in the meantime I will gladly volunteer the opinions on this page as a substitute for people’s google searches.
Welcome, one and all, readers of the Amarillo Independent.
In Remembrance of June 6th, 1944
Tuesday, June 6th, 2006Instead of bashing religious conservatives, I am going to post today to recognize the beginning of one of the greatest events in America’s history, The Battle of Normandy.
The battle of Normandy was arguably one of the most massive and successful military campaigns ever conceived. The world unified against Nazi Germany and began the liberation of France and the onward march to defeat the Germans.
Please take some time today to remember our heroes of yesterday and today. The brave men, from several nations, who landed on those beaches and parachuted into France, some who gave their lives, deserve our utmost respect and gratitude, especially on this day, June 6th.
Welcome!: To the Readers of The Amarillo Independent!
Monday, May 8th, 2006If you read the latest issue of the Amarillo Independent and followed the link on the bottom of the sign I held that was contained in the grossly misrepresented photograph of me on page 5 of said edition then I bid you greetings!
You have stumbled upon my personal political blog. Here, I dish out my conservative opinion for everyone to see and criticize if they feel the need.
Hey, guess what? Like the description of me in the photograph said, I was in Iraq on day 1 of OIF. But, I support the war! Doesn’t that make you anti-war people cringe, that I could be so ignorant and dumb? You will be pleased to know that I voted for Bush as well, still support OIF and the War on Terror, and approve of the job our troops are doing over there.
So please, take your time, browse through what I have to say, and speak your mind as you please. I promise not to write down what you say, word for word, then publish the exact opposite of what you said, unlike David Bowser, who did just that.
But hey, bad publicity is free publicity. Thanks, Mr Bowser, for the free adspace in your newspaper.
Opinion Roundup 11/10/05
Thursday, November 10th, 2005First I would like to wish a happy birthday to all of the US Marines out there. Semper Fidelis Marines! OORAH!
Next I would like to do an opinion round up since I have not posted in a while.
Amarillo lives in a bubble the pretty much doesn’t let anything out; almost not matter what it is. For example, there are, and have been in the past, teachers caught and convicted of sexually assaulting a student. None of that ever makes national news, ever. 4 People were murdered in a nearby town and a suspect caught in Arkansas. No mention on national news whatsoever. I am not complaining, just painting a picture.
That being said, from time to time and when relevant I would like to point out some local things that happen here that are ignored on the national level. For example, we had an anti-war protest rally a couple of weeks ago. I had to work so I could not attend, but I would have been quite happy to attend as a protest-warrior bearing a sign pointing out their mistakes and fallacies.
Thanks to the news report detailing the events of the protest I was able to find the Panhandle Truth Squad. If you want a good laugh head on over to their site. The main poster, SPACEDARK, is an avid supporter of the socialist agenda that Cindy Sheehan subscribes to. This is evident because he remarks about “The Revolution,” avidly attacks and labels those he disagrees with, and gives no solution to the problems he complains about. The funniest thing about the people that bog there is that they label themselves as a “Truth Squad” yet perpetrate seemingly endless hate and vitriol towards people who disagree with them. Their hypocrisy is truly astounding. But hey, that is liberalism for you…
Moving on, I am further dismayed by the House putting a stop to the oil drilling in the Arctic. It is my belief that if there is any way we can stick it to “OPEC” and the middle east as far as oil consumption goes then we should be all for it. Drilling up there is a step in the right direction. Also, though, I want to take that attitude a step further and put more into developing more alternative energy sources to help decrease our dependence on foreign oil.
Over in Borger, a measly 40 miles away, plans are being developed to construct an ethanol refinery. The ethanol would be fermented from corn, grown here in the US. The corn after being fermented would be sold to the neighboring beef industry. The ethanol would be sold to gas station to be put into cars and truck. Ford motor company is advertising that all of their vehicles will be ethanol compatible sometime soon. Just think of the possibilities of ethanol.
Republicans are in power and thanks to stuff like this they might not be for very long. If they are in power they need to put that power to use instead of appeasing democrats and liberals.
The Alito nomination is a very good thing. I really don’t think this needs any explanation. Hopefully things like the insane ruling about eminent domain and other stuff just as asinine will be overturned.
I could opine enough to fill a book. I think I have done enough for now. I think the Panhandle Truth Squad will motivate me to post more.
As Promised, my DD214
