I knew I had seen this cartoon earlier on a left-wing blog, but in a slightly different form, so I double checked.

It turns out I was right.

Here’s a link to the original cartoon by John Darkow. As you can see, there have been a few changes made.

Comparing the two: In the original, the word EURO is written across the entablature (that’s the crosspiece at the top of the columns), as opposed to the word SOCIALISM in this cartoon. The word RECOVERY (i.e. AMERICAN RECOVERY) is written across the woman’s skirt in the original. It’s not on this cartoon.

I usually don’t like this kind of misappropriation of the other side’s cartoons, but in this case the second cartoon expands upon the message of the original, rather than standing it on its head.

The original cartoon points out that the impending collapse of the Euro due to the credit woes of Greece, Spain, Italy Portugal and Ireland will eventually impact our own recovery.

This cartoon digs a little deeper, pointing out the root cause of those credit woes, namely, cradle to grave entitlement programs and early retirements with generous pensions that ultimately proved to be unsustainable.

Ironically, some of the same U.S. newspapers that praised ObamaCare (e.g. New York Times, Washington Post) are now saying that Greece should cut back on its social programs. Here are two examples:
