Is it just me, or do I smell the acrid odor of fear in the air?

I’ve heard that this whole email thing was a rope-a-dope on McCain’s part (i.e. McCain said he doesn’t do email, hoping that Obama would take the bait).

On a related note, I was watching World News Sunday last night. They did a hit piece on Palin’s faith, speculating about how her nearly 20 years in an Assembly of God church (a Pentacostal denomination) might affect how she would govern.

The piece was full of a lot of stock footage of Pentacostals dancing and speaking in tongues. At the end, they mentioned that Bush Attorney General John Ashcroft and Reagan Secretary of the Interior James Watt also came from this religious tradition. I guess the underlying message of this piece was to show everyone how Sarah Palin is some kind of a religious wacko.

What was conspicuously absent was the fact that Palin already left this church about 6 years ago. That was before she even ran for governor, much less for Vice President. She now attends Wasilla Bible Church, a more traditional, non-denominational congregation.

But what’s even more important, dwelling on Palin’s beliefs only serves to remind voters of another candidate who spent two decades in a church with a controversial theology. Unlike Palin, who changed religious affiliation of her own accord, the other candidate was forced to do so out of political expediency.

I’ve never attended an Assembly of God church, but I’ve had friends from the Pentacostal tradition. I find my theological differences with them to be a matter of emphasis (the centrality of tongues and healing) rather than a fundamental disagreement in the basics of classic Chritianity. I can’t say the same about Black Liberation Theology.

I wonder if anyone from ABC News can name a couple of public officials that share the same religious persuasion as Barack Obama. Just askin’.
