When I think of 1968, I think of three events: 1) the assassination of Martin Luther King in April (and the violence that ensued); 2) the assassination of Bobby Kennedy in June; and 3) the riots in the streets of Chicago during the Democratic Convention in August. As concerned as I am about the prospect of an Obama Administration, I'm even more concerned when I read about the relaxing of security at his rallies. God forbid, but if anything were to happen to the junior senator from Illinois, we'd have the combination of 1) and 2), and the threat of further violence might even cause the cancellation of the convention altogether.

I think a much more comforting scenario would be 1972, when another ultra-liberal Democrat candidate, George McGovern, was exposed for who he was between the convention and the election and was soundly defeated. Of course, Obama is a much smoother politician than McGovern ever was, so the 1972 scenario might not be as viable as the 1968 scenario.

And as the convention approaches, if it looks like Obama will be another McGovern, the superdelegates (created to avoid such such a defeat) would take matters into their own hands, which would lead to the disaster that Douglas Wilder predicted. I guess timing is everything; if the Democrats can be lulled into a sense of Obama invincability until after the convention, we might have another 1972. But that's a big if.

But no matter what scenario emerges, it's bound to be a very interesting (if not inter-resting) summer this year.
