John Kerry is stupid. He is a liar and a traitor. But even I was shocked by his recent statement about the troops. It was a blunder of stupendous proportions and will sink him, politically, forever outside the liberal haven of Mass. Read more here. Pay particular attention to the Glen Beck film.
I don’t know whether this is the “worst political blunder in history” (there have been some doozies over the years), but it’s gotta be right up there (I’ll return to this question a bit later).
I might have given Kerry the benefit of the doubt, even though his “botched joke” explanation is a real stretch, were it not for his proven track record on his disdain for the military. One of the video clips Celtictexan has linked to documents this very well (1971, 2005, 2006), but leaves out his 1972 comments lamenting that an all-volunteer force would consider war crimes as “just doing their job” (unfortunately, there are no audio or video clips of that quote).
Here’s a great clip from the Conan O’Brien show that illustrates just how absurd the “botched joke” defense is:

Getting back to the magnitude of this blunder, I think it all depends on how energized the conservative base remains. Kerry has awoken a sleeping giant in this campaign. If the outrage lasts through next Tuesday and tips the balance back to the Republicans, this will be a monumental blunder; if it fizzles, it’ll be nothing more than a political footnote, although in either case, it spells the end of Kerry’s aspirations for national political office, IMHO.
Well when I first stated that Kerry had made theworst political bluder in history I was speaking only about his personal political career. I was taking a wait and see as far as teh congressional stuff. I had hoped but guess it just didn’t carry over.
So now we have the true voice of of democrats good ol Nancy.
Gigantic blunder? Absolutely. Stupid? Arguable. Traitor? That’s despicable. The man’s a decorated United States Navy veteran, something those lying Swift Boat scumbags will never be able to change.
Whereas I agree that traitor is too strong an invective in Kerry’s case, being a decorated war hero does not make one immune from criticism of later acts.
Here’s a short biography of a decorated United States Army veteran whose heroics at Fort Ticonderoga and Saratoga can never be changed either. History has chosen to downplay that heroism, though:
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Benedict_Arnold
Am I saying that Kerry is another Benedict Arnold? By no means. I think history will remember him as a pompous, arrogant opportunist who used his own combat experience to besmirch a whole generation of Vietnam vets for his own political gain. Now he’s done it to the Iraq war veterans, too.
As a retired Army master sergeant with 20 years service, I can tell you that Kerry isn’t the first officer to look down his nose at us enlisted types – just the most vocal.
BTW, let me take this opportunity to wish celtictexan and Bodacious a very Happy Veteran’s Day for their service in the Navy and Marine Corps, respectively. Panhandle expat, I’d wish you a Happy Veteran’s Day too, but I don’t recall which branch you served in. Thanks for stopping by, though. Everyone is welcome here, veteran and non-veteran alike.

Despicable? Could I hear your reasoning behind that?
Upon further reflection, I’m less apt to dismiss celtictexan’s accusation of treason outright. Wikipedia provides a broader definition of treason than I would have expected:
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Treason
As far as the Swift Boat veteran accusations, I find them compelling but not necessarily conclusive. It’s difficult to make an ironclad case based on incidents that occurred more than 30 years ago in the fog of war. That being said, Kerry has been proven to be at least “mistaken” in his wartime recollections (e.g. the Christmas in Cambodia, 1968). In addition, would anyone have expected Kerry to do anything but deny the Swift Boaters’ version in the midst of a presidential race, even if it were true?
I remember watching the Dem convention, and seeing Kerry strut unto the stage and proudly proclaim,”Reporting for duty”. And the crowd went wild.
It occurred to me how quickly attitudes can change, when the left sees opportunity. Many of these cheering hoards were most likely the ones who spit on returning Vietnam vets. They were certainly the ones now opposing the war on terror.
Then I asked myself what are they really cheering? Are they cheering the man who purported himself to be a war hero? No way. Not the left. I think they were cheering the man who returned and called Nam vets war criminals and baby killers. They were cheering the man who throwed away the purple heart received for a scratched finger. They were cheering the long haired Hippy who before congress, spewed his lies about his fellow warriors. The politician who even today lets slip his disdain for the military.
John Kerry is a traitor, he always was a traitor, he always will be a traitor. No broad definition needed. It’s just that simple.
