As promised a few days ago, I’m taking some time out of my busy weekend schedule to post a few observations about Mark Foley and his escapades with congressional pages.
First, let me start with some common ground that nearly all of us, regardless of our political persuasion, came agree upon:
1) For a 54-year-old public servant to send emails and instant messages of an explicit sexual nature to underage kids he had met through his official duties is totally unacceptable.
2) For that same public servant to have done this while at the same time advocating for tougher laws regarding the exploitation of children is the epitome of hypocrisy.
3) For said public servant to send his lawyer out to tell everyone that he had been abused by a clergyman between the ages of 13 and 15, as if this somehow excuses this behavior, and then to send the same attorney out to explain that he wasn’t making excuses takes cowardice and shirking of personal responsibility to new heights.
4) Anyone who was aware of the extent of this public servant’s abuse of power and did nothing to stop it is also culpable.
However, like most scandals of this type, there are a number of subtexts to this story:
1) Gay sex. The fact that Congressman Foley was pursuing teenage boys (as opposed to teenage girls) adds as political correctness aspect to this story. Assuming for a moment that Speaker Hastert or others in the Republican leadership knew only of the tamer emails and not the more salacious instant messages, would they have been accused of gay bashing if they had exposed Foley’s behavior?
2) Timing of the exposé. If anyone who knew should have done something to stop it, wouldn’t the press be at least as guilty as the Republican leadership? At least two newspapers (the St. Petersburg Gazette and the Miami Herald) admitted that they were aware of Foley’s behavior sometime in 2005, but did nothing until the month before the elections. Democrats stood to gain from delaying the release of this information, too. I’m not necessarily saying there was a connection (the media could have sat on this story for pecuniary gain in the form of increased sales or viewership), but it wouldn’t be the first time the Democrats found an allies in the press just prior to an election.
3) Double standard. In 1983, when the Democrats were in the majority and two congressmen actually admitted to having sex with underage pages (one Republican, with a female page; and one Democrat with a male page), Congress would only agree to censure the offenders. The Democrat, who was totally unrepentant, served another 13 years and was recommended for a committee chairmanship by the woman who now wants to be Speaker.

Toward the end of the thread, the comments get a little off topic, but it’s still an interesting exchange with several good links.
The Foley scandal is a complex nexus of abuse of power, pedophilia, gay vs. straight sex, October surprises, and congressional oversight. Where a person stands on these issues shouldn’t be influenced by the party affiliation of the perpetrator.

Now the liberals should really love Foley: using his position of power to have consenual sex (like Studds) with a 21-year-old (like Clinton). If the ex-page had run a gay prostitution business out of Foley’s residence like Barney Frank’s lover had, Foley would have won the liberal trifecta.

No one is being disciplined at all here! Foley’s gone, but he wasn’t going to run again anyway. At least some action was taken by the previous legislative bodies.

Republican benefactor of conservative Christian groups, Richard A. Dasen Sr., was found guilty of raping a 15-year old girl. Dasen, 62, who is married with grown children and several grandchildren,
has told police that over the past decade he paid more than $1 million to have sex with a large number of young women.
Republican city councilman Mark Harris, who is described as a “good military man” and “church goer,” was convicted of repeatedly having sex with an 11-year-old girl and sentenced to 12 years in prison.

because if you did all that research yourself, then I’d have to say you really need to get a life.
The sad fact of the matter is, Democrats always have to rely on the corruption of Republicans in order to gain power (remember Watergate and “Read my lips”?). Their campaign slogan seems to be, “Vote for us. We’re not Republicans.” If they actually ran a positive campaign, based solely on their platform (higher taxes, partial birth abortion, gay marriage, open borders, socialized medicine, soft on national security), they’d never get elected.
The other sad fact of the matter is, the Democrats might very well win both houses of Congress in November. Be careful what you wish for, Clint. Along with power goes blame when it all blows up in your faces.

It seems the other child the one celebrated by the Democraps, not the one demonised for lesser crimes, Gary Studs is dead. They didn’t say what of, but since he’s gay it probably was aids. I wonder how many of his fellow liberal congressmaen are running to the doctor for a check up right now? I wonder how the page he had repeated sex with is doing?
