Fair and Balanced

Friday, September 15th, 2006

This letter in today’s Amarillo Globe news made me thank once again that I believe in personal responsibility.

James Fluegel says, among other things, “It is time conservatives who backed Bush on the Iraq misadventure admit we were deceived and wrong.”

His LTE says a lot of other stuff and makes some decent points about getting back to conservatism, which I agree with, but this is the only line I somewhat disagree with.

Fluegel, along with the left and democrats, are scapegoating Bush for their own poor decisions.  The left and their supporters have so much hatred for Bush they forget they signed the resolution to go to war and made a bug fuss about Saddam having WMDs and whatever else.  I am sure you remember those quote passed around in e-mails and in various videos out there.

If Bush is a liar, all of the other people who repeated what he said are liars, too.  Given that, how many people do you honestly think will admit they are liars?  My bet is none.

Secondly, if Mr. Fuegel wants to think he was deceived and he was wrong to support OIF, that’s fine, but there is a lot more blame to be spread around as opposed to putting it all on Bush’s shoulders.

America Rejects Air America

Wednesday, September 13th, 2006

Michell Malkin is reporting that Air America is filing for bankruptcy.  The Drudge report also has a link to the liberal blog that broke the story so the actual content isn’t available.

To me this is proof that America rejects liberalism.  Conservative commentators reign supreme on cable news and the radio waves.

The Other 9-11

Sunday, September 10th, 2006

On September 11, we will commemorate the fateful events of five years ago.  But I wonder how many people will reflect on what occurred 323 years ago on that date.

In 1683, the Islamic forces of the Ottoman Empire were threatening Central Europe, having already conquered Hungary and Transylvania in a conflict that had been raging for 300 years. By July 14th of that year, the Ottoman forces, led by Grand Vizier Merzifonlu Kara Mustafa Pasha, already had Vienna under siege.  Without reinforcements, Vienna would most certainly fall, and with it, most likely the rest of Europe.

The Poles, led by King Jan III Sobieski, came to the rescue, joining forces with troops from Saxony, Bavaria, Baden, Franconia and Swabia, as well as the Austrians under Emperor Leopold.  The alliance, known as the Holy League, routed the Ottomans in the Battle of Vienna, which began on September 11 and concluded on September 12, 1683.

It took another 16 years, but the Europeans finally succeeded in pushing the Turks out of Hungary and Transylvania.  The Great Powers of Europe at the time (Austria, Prussia, and Russia) showed their gratitude to the Poland by gradually carving up Polish territory among themselves until by 1795, Poland disappeared as a sovereign nation.  It would take another 123 years and a World War before Poland regained its independence.

So what does this have to do with the 9-11 of five years ago, you might ask?  I can think of three things:  1)  Just like 17th Century Europe, Western civilization is being threatened by a form of radical Islam that wants to spread its religion and influence by force throughout the world; 2) Like the Poles, we Americans can expect about as much gratitude from the rest of the world for our efforts as Sobieski received for his; and 3) As was the case  more than 300 years ago, there is no quick fix; the current conflict will not be won in five, or even ten, years.  But we must continue to both resist and take the offensive if we expect our way of life to survive.

My Opinion on ABC’s "The Path to 9/11"

Thursday, September 7th, 2006

Democrats are coming out of the woodwork to complain about ABC’s upcoming docudrama “Path to 9/11″ because it (allegedly falsely)slams the Clinton administration for not doing enough to catch Osamma bin Laden. Bill Clinton, and Sandy Berger, both convicted liars and felons, have written letters to ABC saying that the docudrama needs to be changed or not aired at all. Richard Clarke and Albright are in on the whinefest, too.

I can understand them being upset especially if what is being portrayed as false. I am skeptical of taking convicted and known liars words about what went on then, however. One scene, as described in the link above, does seem to be false. The scene has to do with Albirght tipping Pakistan off to missile being launched against OBL when the 9/11 commission report says that a member of the U.S. Joint Chiefs of Staff tipped Pakistan off about the ordeal. Given that, at least some of the complaints are legitimate.

The only bone I have to pick with their complaining is their hypocrisy. Where were these people’s complaints when Michael Moore was producing fabrications about the Bush administration? I’ll tell you where they were, they (democrats) were inviting Michael Moore to sit in the presidential box at the Democratic National Convention.

Furthermore, Fahrenheit 9/11 was touted as a factual documentary and even won awards as such. “The Path to 9/11″ is being touted as a docudrama and specifically says that scenes are dramatized. Not that just because “The Path to 9/11″ may have fabrications does not make those fabrications ok. The point is that Democrats are selective in their criticisms.

Be sure and check out Michelle Malkin’s website where she illustrates’s the differences in how Republicans and Democrat bloggers are planning on commemorating the anniversary of 9/11.

I really don’t plan on watching the program. I have class on Monday so if I watched it on Sunday I would be left unsatisfied.

Update: John Hawkins at rightwing news.com puts it into perspective:

Having the Clinton Administration complain that they look bad in this mini-series is like a football team that lost a game 56-0 griping that the highlight reel on the news that night made them look bad. The truth is that the Clinton Administration didn’t take terrorism as seriously as they should have and did very little of note to prevent it. Since that’s the case, the Clinton Administration can’t possibly come off well in any sort of mini-series that accurately discusses what happened.

Gas Prices

Remember how Bush made gas prices go up?  Now that gas prices are going down, what is Bush doing to make them go down? Does anybody know?

Sectarian Violence

Sunday, September 3rd, 2006

With all the talk about civil war in Iraq, I’m reminded of the following accounts of sectarian violence I read awhile back:

“They would ride up behind a gasping victim and behead him with one terrible slash of the sword.  Another … saw the head of one of their victims … rolling along the street, while the … assassin furiously pursued his next victim, waving his bloody sword and shrieking, “I’ll kill more!  I’ll kill more!”

“A man’s executioner could be a friend, or a stranger.  Every day for fifteen years, … a … tea merchant … had served a pot of Assam tea to the Moslem leatherworker who came rushing to his shop one August morning.  He was setting the man’s ration on his little brass balance when he looked up to see his customer, his face contorted in hate, pointing at him and screaming, “Kill him!  Kill him!”

“A dozen Moslem hoodlums raced out of the alley.  One severed [his] leg at the knee with a sword.  In an instant they had killed his ninety-year-old father and his only son.  The last sight he saw as he lost consciousness was his eighteen-year-old daughter, screaming in fright, being carried off on the shoulders of the man whom he had been serving tea for fifteen years.”

Why, you might ask, haven’t we heard about these incidents in the press?  There’s a simple answer:  these events did not take place in Iraq between Sunnis and Shiites in 2006, but rather in the Punjab, between Moslems, Sikhs, and Hindus nearly 60 years ago.  The preceding accounts were taken from Chapter 13 of the book, “Freedom at Midnight” by Larry Collins and Dominique LaPierre.  During this six-week reign of terror following the independence of India, “[h]alf as many Indians would lose their lives in that slaughter as Americans in four years of combat in World War II.”

And yet, according Collins and LaPierre, “It was not a war; it was not civil war; it was not a guerilla campaign.  It was a convulsion, the sudden, shattering collapse of a society.”  Another interesting quote to consider:  “A motive that had nothing to do with religious fervor was more often behind the Moslems’ attacks on Hindus and Sikhs in Pakistan.  It was greed, a simple, often carefully orchestrated effort to grab the lands, shops and wealth of their neighbors.”

In 1947, India endured a period of sectarian violence that makes Iraq’s problems pale in comparison, to later become the most populous democracy in the world.  What are the chances of history repeating itself in Iraq?  We may never know if we give up too soon.
