Joe Rosenthal, the photographer who memorialized the raising of the American flag at Iwo Jima, passed away at the age of 94. Here’s a link to his obituary from the Associated Press:

One of the things I find interesting in light of the recent “fauxtography” scandal is this tidbit:

The photo actually shows the second raising of the flag that day on Mount Suribachi on the Japanese island. The first flag had been deemed too small.

I remembered having heard this before, as well as another similar example from World War II. When General MacArthur returned to the Phillipines, he allegedly was carried onto shore from the landing craft so as not to get wet. This landing was then re-enacted to show the now famous footage of him wading through the water to reach the shore.

These examples of making our country’s efforts appear more noble are a far cry from the recent photoshopping and staging of images from the Israel-Hizbollah conflict, which were designed to make Israel look less noble. The fact that Western news services so readily published the latter show that they are either gullible to the extreme, or else they have an anti-Israel agenda.

What about the possibility of pulling out of Iraq, letting Iran invade and lose resources fighting their own kind,
and then come in and mop up the dregs?
